Free Form Dyeing Course

This class is for the adventurous fiber artist. We will be throwing out many of the rules necessary to dye even, repeatable fiber. In other words, I anticipate that we will have happy ‘accidents’ and learn a lot about the interaction of colors.

On the first day, I will demonstrate 4X4 Gradient Dyeing. This involves dyeing 16 skeins of yarn to varying degrees of saturation and then over dying the same skeins in another color to produce 16 different colors. This is all accomplished with only two batches!

The second day I will show how to dye fleece multiple colors by using Mason jars. Both of these techniques require waiting for the fiber to process, so we will take advantage of that down time to show a few other techniques such as casserole dyeing and low immersion dyeing.

All of the techniques in this class are suitable for dyeing either yarn or loose fiber. Since we will be using acid dyes, we will be using only animal fibers such as wool and mohair.
