What You Will Learn

Class 01:

  • The Moose: What a powerful and majestic creature he is. We will put our drawing onto the canvas or paper before the session and paint it together. We will use earth colors to create the abstracted landscape in the background and the early frost of morning in the foreground. We will paint the wary look of the moose as he ventures into the start of his day. The selection of colors to blend him into his environment and the close fur of the moose will take a delicate touch of the brush.

Class 02:

  • The Bald Eagle: This will be our introduction to feathers, both the drawing of them and then painting them in acrylic paint. There is always the choice of painting feathers with great precision or in a looser, more symbolic way. By layering various colors the feathers will be built up to appear to be three-dimensional. The tree branches will be layered, to show that some fungus is growing there and the play of light and shadow will be important both on the eagle and on the branches.

Class 03:

  • The Fawn: This painting presents us with the opportunity to place a light image against a darker background, as well as to blend colors. There is the sense of perspective as the background
fades away into the deep forest. We will create that illusion with only a few strokes of the brush. The fawn’s eyes are alert and the stance is natural as it is aware of being in an open meadow. The grasses are layered and fresh as spring.

Class 04:

  • The Loon: How haunting is the loon’s call and how mysterious. The beautiful patterns on the loon are a wonder. The colors we paint are those of a warm night lit only by the moonlight. We are aware that we paint an approximation of the patterns to give the impression of the feathers on the loon and the reflections in the very still waters of a lake.

Class 05:

  • The Hare/Rabbit: The hare’s coat will give us a chance to see what it takes to make it look full and furry and to paint weeds and grass. Each of the animals has a different eye treatment and it will be fun to make this as realistic as possible, and bring out the personality of the animal in its eyes. We are aware that there is light against dark and dark against light and that contrast will be separating, but hiding, the hare from its predators in the tall grasses.

Class 06:

  • The Mountain Goat: The goat is so regal as it stands up high on the rocks. It is important that we select and paint colors that will allow the mountain goat to be front and center in the foreground
and not become lost in the busy forest behind him. We will make his fur mottled as it would be and make sure the antlers look heavy and coming forward. The background is painted using a variety of forest colors and the rock he is standing on is simple and allows us to focus on the mountain goat.

Class 07:

  • The Lion: We will paint the short fur of the male lion, its hairs close in to the body and the fullness of the mane. We will use the complementary colors, blue and orange, to bring attention to the center of interest that is the face of the lion. We will be aware of the feline way the body curves around. The
lion is lying in peace, gazing out of his golden eyes at his world. We notice the sheer strength in his hind leg muscles.

Class 08:

  • The Fox: Using lights and darks, silver and reddish tones, we can accentuate the features of this quizzical fox. Can we capture the stare of this fox? We will paint the fur in multiple layers with several colors. The background is highlighting the complementary colors, reds and greens, and it uses simple, but effective, design to set the fox into the foreground.

Class 09:

  • BONUS COURSE! The Bear: There is a look of great curiosity in this adult bear surrounded by wildflowers in the lush summer grass. His fur is thick and heavy and we will paint it in layers to build up that look. We will work with creating the field and flowers in simple, but effective brushstrokes.
