Exploring the Art of Fired Clay Using a Microwave Kiln

In this three day course you will learn how to finish fired clay pieces in a microwave kiln. These pieces can be used for jewelry, trinket dishes, wind chimes, etc. We will cover safety, equipment, materials, types of clay, types of glazes, underglazes, and overglazes, methods for using a microwave with a microwave kiln, and troubleshooting issues that may occur during firing.

We will cover techniques for using clay such as slip casting, sprig molds, silicon molds, drape and slump molds, pinch and coil pots, dots, rip and tear, agateware and washes. Raw clay techniques covered will include throwing on a mini-wheel, cleaning greenware, sgraffito on greenware, slip trailing, and bisque firing.

Glazing techniques will include crackle, multiple glazes on one piece, raku and horse-hair raku.

Decals and china painting with enamels will be covered as well as incorporating cremains into a memorial piece. Making essential oil pendants from bisque will also be covered.
