Loretta Metzger

I’m one of those people who has dabbled in the world of Arts and Crafts all my life. A new craft or new art form – I’ll try that! When I retired from a career in Education, I finally had time to play full time.

In 2010 Paverpol found me. It is a fabric hardener that allows me to create sculptures from old t-shirts, electrical wire, tinfoil, and found objects. The possibilities are endless. In 2012 I became a Paverpol instructor and in 2016 I became the Regional Distributor for Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This has allowed me to share my passion for fabric sculpting with others, to teach, to learn, to create, and to be surrounded by people with an appreciation for all things beautiful. I still dabble in other areas, but I now describe myself as a Paverpol artist. Other than a few classes with some very talented Paverpol artists, I am largely self taught.

I have always had a love affair with fabric. It is something about the tactile pleasure as it flows through your hand. I also have a thing about touching plant leaves! I love the drape and flow of fabric. Imagine that feeling with wet fabric? That is fabric sculpting. Once you have an idea, you build the form required to support the fabric. Then let the fabric do its thing.

Natural fibres absorb the Paverpol and harden to a state that allows the sculptures to survive outside year round, even in our harsh winters. Most of my pieces can be placed either indoors or outdoors. Mixed media has begun to creep into some of my work. These pieces often incorporate different materials that weather less well and are better kept indoors.

Most days you will find me either in the garden or with my hands in Paverpol. I work at my home studio in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
